If you have a BMW with a diesel engine, you will have a Diesel Particulate Filter also known as a BMW DPF. The Diesel Particulate Filter is an integral part of a diesel-powered BMW’s exhaust system. It has been a legal requirement to fit a Diesel Particulate Filter to all new diesel vehicles since 2012. But what is a Diesel Particulate Filter and why is it so important?

WHAT IS THE DPF FILTER ON MY BMW?

The BMW DPF on your BMW is a filter that removes large soot particles from the exhaust gases to reduce pollution. It continues to collect the particles of soot until your BMW’s engine control unit (ECU) decides it is time for it to be cleared. The BMW’s ECU then initiates a regeneration, by heating up the Diesel Particulate Filter, so all the particles are incinerated into a very fine dust. However, this only works if your BMW is in full working order and:

The BMW’s engine has no fault codes

You are travelling at motorway speeds in your BMW

The correct oil for the BMW is being used

The BMW’s glow plugs are working

BMW DPF CHEMICAL CLEANING

If these criteria are not met, such as a BMW that only travels in town, then the BMW DPF will not regenerate, and it will need chemical cleaning.
