If your Mercedes is a diesel, you probably have a Mercedes DPF. The DPF is an integral part of a diesel-powered Mercedes’s exhaust system. It has been a legal requirement to fit a DPF to all new diesel vehicles since 2012. But why is the DPF on your Mercedes so important?

WHAT IS THE DPF ON MY MERCEDES?

The abbreviation DPF means “Diesel Particulate Filter”. The DPF on your Mercedes is a filter that removes large soot particles from the exhaust gases to reduce pollution. It continues to collect the particles of soot until your Mercedes’s engine control unit (ECU) decides it is time for it to be cleared. The Mercedes’s ECU then initiates a regeneration, by heating up the DPF so all the particles are incinerated into a very fine dust. However, this only works if your Mercedes is in full working order and:

The Mercedes’s engine has no fault codes.

You are travelling at motorway speeds in your Mercedes.

The correct oil for the Mercedes is being used.

The Mercedes’s glow plugs are working.

If any of these criteria are not met, such as if your Mercedes that only travels in town, then the Mercedes DPF will not regenerate and it will need chemical cleaning.
